Design: Typographic World Map

by Max on August 22, 2009

Here’s another cool project from my Design vaults: the typographic world map!

I started this project initially in late 2002, with the intentions to mark each world nation with its national flag, few iterations later and I thought “wouldn’t it be cool to have their actual names displayed instead?”

Bingo! I spent a couple of weeks working on this project as a detailing and large format design exercise. The original vector file contains every United Nations recognized nation, some 192 countries altogether. Heck, even the Vatican City made it!

Fast forward today, I was checking some of my old projects and found this slightly outdated gem, and decide to clean it up, add the newly recognized nations  to-day (Hello Montenegro!) and share it with the world. Once the original vector file was updated, I dropped it in Photoshop, applied a couple of filters and touch-ups and voila: four eye-catching, and dare say useful, desktop wallpapers!

Plus, you can download the original Illustrator vector file plus all four wallpapers in a whopping 10178 x 4667 resolution JPGs in a compressed WinRAR file (88 Mbs).

Note: For commercial use, contact me directly: sigoya [at] gmail [.] com

For non-commercial project, make sure to credit me with a back-link. Cheers!

Tools used: Freehand, Illustrator & Photoshop.

Hi Max,
No offense but this looks way too much like Vladstudio’s design at http://www.vladstudio.com/wallpaper/?typographicworldmap

Im curious to know who inspired whom?

It is quite close, except that my version was created close to a decade ago for a school project and is detail-oriented rather than stylistic.

I guess creative minds think alike :)
