Posters are considered to be an artsy form of graphic design, worthy of art collections, museums and portfolios. That said, creating a well balanced and eye catching poster is a challenge, especially if you are doing your first one.
My first poster was a college assignment for a youth dance and music festival. First, we had to create a loud and colorful logo, which as you can see here, was a bit rough around the edges, but served its purpose well. The poster part of the assignment, took the most time and effort, going from an overly complicated design with numerous graphic elements and colors, to the final muted, simple and elegant composition.
The overall design process proved that less is more, especially with negative areas and colors, and I still follow that principle closely in all my work.
